Chair, Patient Safety and Quality Committee, Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine

We are proud to announce that Rebecca F. Hamm, MD, MSCE, Assistant Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded the FOCUS Early Achievement Award for the Advancement of Women in Medicine.

This prestigious honor recognizes faculty at the assistant professor rank who demonstrate excellence in advancing women across the continuum of academic medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) and beyond. Awardees are selected for their impact in domains such as advocacy, structural change, mentorship, sponsorship, education, science, clinical care, and administration.

Dr. Hamm embodies these values through her leadership, scholarship, and dedication to equity in maternal health. Her clinical practice focuses on caring for patients with high-risk pregnancies, while her research addresses closing the evidence-to-practice gap in obstetrics and reducing racial disparities in maternal outcomes. Notably, she has led federally funded studies, including a K23 award in 2020 and an R01 in 2023, advancing implementation science in labor and delivery care.

Beyond her research and clinical work, Dr. Hamm is a dedicated mentor to students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty, guiding projects in implementation science, health disparities, and quality improvement. Since joining Penn’s faculty in 2020, Dr. Hamm has formally mentored more than 20 undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows, and early-career faculty. Together, her mentees have produced over 30 peer-reviewed publications, with several securing independent grants. One mentee remarked, “Dr. Hamm’s introductions opened doors I didn’t know existed, got me job interviews, and reshaped research projects.”

Dr. Hamm also co-founded the Implementation Science for Maternal Health Interest Group in 2020, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field. In 2025, she convened Penn’s inaugural Research in Maternal Health Equity Symposium, uniting stakeholders across the health system to accelerate progress in reducing disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality.

Dr. Hamm earned her BA from the University of Pennsylvania, her MD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and her MS in Clinical Epidemiology during fellowship training at Penn. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Rebecca Hamm on this well-deserved recognition. Her commitment to advancing women in medicine and improving maternal health outcomes continues to inspire and elevate our community.
